First off, the absolute value of one number will always be positive.

If you have two of them, it would be a positive multiplied by another positive. Two positives multiplied together always equals a positive.

Because the answer of an absolute value is always positive. The absolute value is how far that number is from 0. So -2 and 2 are both 2 away from zero so |2| = 2 and |-2| = 2 also. The product of two absolute values is always positive simply because the product of two positives is always positive.

Actually, that's not strictly correct - it's always a non-negative number, but not necessarily positive; it could be 0.

Anyway, if we exclude zero values, then the absolute value is always positive, and the product of two positive numbers is always positive.

To make this statement airtight we just need to modify it slightly by saying that the absolute value is always positive (or zero), and the product of two numbers that are positive (or zero) is always positive (or zero).

the product of two absolute values isn't always positive because if there was a negative sign outside of the parenthesis then the absolute value of the number would no longer be positive

absolute value is a measure of distance from zero--you can't have a negative amount of distance. Even if you travel backwards, you cover a positive amount of distance.

That's not true. |1| * |0| = 0, which is not positive.
