okay so next semester i am planning on trying out for our high school's hip hop/ step team...
Currently i am a student at a dance studio taking private lessons for hip hop ( i have been doing hip hop for about almost a year) ..and my dance instructor is helping me doing choreo for the 2nd part of the try outs ( the 2nd part you have to perform your own routine.) and both of the teachers who run the team both know i dance and want me to try out...
i really have no doubt that i could make it with this choreography... that is, if my nerves wouldn't get the best of me! >.<
What should I expect at the try outs (the 1st portion is learning one of their routines) and any tips for the nerves?
Hopefully once the music starts...all the nervousness will drain out of me!
i really want to make this team more than anything!!!

I'm a beginning dancer, but have dealt with stage nerves MANY times as I'm musician. My guess with the tryouts would be to be prepared to do the main group dance in smaller groups in front of the coach. They will want to see on how you perform with the group, in a small ensemble, and solo.

For the nerves, it just comes down to practice. It's OKAY to be nervous. I usually think of the famous quote from Star Wars "May the force be with you." Know your routine really well and perform it in front of others before your actual audition. Do it for your friends, members of various organizations you're in, local teen dance club, local talent shows, etc. Practice doing your routine with smile on your face...as if you're really have fun with the routine (and you should be!). Visualizing yourself performing your routine really well...even visualizing the judges faces helps, especially if you can see their facial expressions.

On the actual day of the audition, you may want to avoid additional unnatural sugars and caffience (soda, candy, etc). This is because you don't want to deal with a sugar rush that may possibly be kicked into gear with the nerves. I find that I do like to have a bit of something to eat beforehand, especially if I haven't eaten much all day. So, you may want to consider having a light snack with you to eat if you think it'll help settle the butterflies in your stomach.

This may sound a bit over the top, but I remember being told by a drum major in high school to "Don't think on you have to beat, think on who has to beat YOU!"...anything to give you a bit of a confidence boost.

Most of all, smile, and just have fun!

When I auditioned to be on my schools hip-hop team the first potion was with a group of people around the second part was with just the dance teachers and instructors there. I don't know if this is how yours will be but it is usually like that in acting also, so that's probably how it will be.

Tips for the nerves: pretend for a minute that you already passed. You have enough experience, so it it reasinable to expect. Imagine what would you do and feel like when you know you already passed.
