If a 10 x 10 grid represents the number 1, then each cell in the grid represents 1/100, because there are 100 cells in the 10 x 10 grid.
Therefore, to represent 1.24, you would use 1 whole grid plus 24 (24/100) cells of another grid.
To represent 1.05, you would use 1 whole grid plus 5 (5/100) cells of another grid.

A 10x10 grid has 100 squares in it, so 1.24 represents 124 squares; this is one complete grid plus 24 squares from the second grid. Similarly, 1.05 can be represented by one complete grid and 5 squares from the second grid.

To compare thenumbers, look first at complete grids; they each have one. Now look at partially complete grids; the one for 1.24 has 24 squares used, and the one for 1.05 only has 5 squares used. So 1.24 is bigger by 19 squares, or 0.19.
