It's from the latin word cadmia, (zinc oxide) from its tendency to occur along with zinc deposits.

According to http://userspages.uob.edu.bh/bobcat/Cadmium_Cd.htm

"Name Origin: From the Greek word kadmeia (ancient name for calamine) and from the Latin word cadmia "

According to http://www.chemnetbase.com/periodic_table/elements/cadmium.htm

Calamine is zinc carbonate, and cadmium is often found in association with zinc compounds. I guess that's the association.

I didn't know any of this, but I was interested by your question.
