I am going to attend the University of Arizona next fall, and I am already planning on joining a sorority. I'm not quite sure how competitive the greek scene is at UofA, but I really want to know if it will be absolutely necessary for me to have a recommendation? All of the sororities claim it is optional, but you know how that goes...! I really don't know anyone that has been in a sorority before to write a recommendation. Does anyone have any ideas or information that would be useful

From my limited knowledge of sororities (I was in a fraternity) I can tell you that recommendations are meaningless. The only time you'll need a recommendation is if you're fat and annoying (sorry, it's the truth), and even then, they may only take you if you're legacy. You'll get invited back if you meet their requirements; this meaning if they think you are cool.
