Talk to the photographer, sometimes they have good ideas on what they like. I'm not a big fan of stiff, overly formal posed family pictures, too generic and after a while they all look the same and the people in the photos don't look like the people I know, they look characterless. ou know, the slight blue background with someone sitting and another's hand lightly resting on another's shoulder...boring! I like to see a bit of the family's personality shine through.
Dress the kids in similar colour values and then you should stand out from them by wearing a different colour in a value darker or lighter. This unites the kids and make it obvious you are the Mom. My personal advice is if they don't normally wear suits and dresses and hate them; then don't force the issue. Try to get them in something similar to what they normally wear, only dressier. You want them to look good, not uncomfortable. Be sure they are clean, hair neat and tidy, and have the clothes clean, tidy and in good repair. No cat hair or lint!
Here's some make-up advice from a hand out form a pro photographer: If you don't normally wear make-up don't suddenly go overboard for your picture. Color portrait lighting will saturate color and make it brighter. Stick with matte-- not shiny foundations or powder, blend well so it's not streaky. use a very light touch on blush and lip colours. You don't want big glaring apple cheeks or the center of attention to be big red lips. Stay natural and neutral. Emphasize the eyes, use a pale shimmer powder under the brow, in the corner of the eye by the tear duct and on what TV people call "the sparkle point", the center of the eyelid close to lash line. Don't use harsh glitter, but use a subtle shimmer. Don't use purples and brilliant pinks, they might make the eyes look bloodshot. Use a light touch of eyeliner and mascara. Draw the attention to your eyes. You might want to use a tooth whitener before the picture. For the son, give him a brushing of matte powder just before the picture so there are no shiny spots.
And most of all be relaxed and natural.

I think matching colors would look best, like all wear black pants/skirt whatever, and maybe a light blue or white top, but make each person unique (son w/ a tie) girls w/ their own necklaces And as for make-up maybe put on a bit more mascara and blush than normal w/ some lip gloss, but not too much just to accentuate features a bit better in the picture Im sure it will look great no matter what you do !!

I would say you can all match, for example wear white shirts and dark pants/skirts. Or similar colors. Very low cut shirts look bad. Try collared shirts and nice contrasting skirt or pants. Same for your children. And as to make up, put on more blush than you normally wear, try to cover up dark circles/whatever other problem areas you have. Make sure you eye or lip make up is a bit darker than normally. People tend to look washed out in the pictures, so make sure you don't. But don't pile enough make up for a clown look either. You have done this for long enough, so I'm sure you know how to put on make up and look great!
Don't experiment - look like yourself!
And, most important, be happy! You have two great kids! As long as you all look like a loving, happy family (which you are!), the picture will come out great!

Yes, matching clothes looks awesome. I had a friend who's family had a picture awhile ago and they had like trees and grass in the background (during the fall, so the leaves were pretty, you know how fall is) and they all wore blue jeans, the guys wore red polo shirts and the girls wore red sweaters. They also all had black shoes on, but if you just want to do Tennis shoes it doesn't matter. It was so nice, i loved it.

1] First, decide on dress code: suits/dresses, casual, etc.
2] no matching! Too cliche. Coordinate colors instead.
example: son in gray suit, blue shirt/tie; daughter in jade green; mom in violet dress.
3] wear same makeup as you would to work or church. Earrings and necklaces OK: pins reflect light funny.

You should definitely wear matching colors like black or white, so you guys would look more balance in the picture. Make-up will look good but don't over do it.

if you want more of a casual picture id say wear jeans and then all choose your own shirt to wear, or pick a color. i think jeans and a white shirt is nice, but maybe its too plain for you.
dont wear too much makeup, just apply how much you usually wear on a regular basis.

HAVE A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO TAKEN - THIS LOOKS MORE CLASSY AND PROFESSIONAL.
BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS ALSO DON'T REQUIRE PEOPLE TO MATCH AS WELL.
ALWAYS KEEP THE MAKEUP LIGHT - THIN COAT OF LIPSTICK, SOME EYELINER AND A LITTLE SHADOW TO MAKE THE EYES POP IN THE B&W PHOTO
