Multiple carbs or a 4 bbl. (yes they make 4 bbl intakes for in lines) Porting and polishing the heads. Check out old Hot rod magazines. Back in the 50's and 60's guys built what they had. It would be easier to build a 350 but everybody does that. You probably won't have 400 horses under the hood but you will make people wonder what you have. An in line with a four bbl and dual exhaust has a very distinctive sound. Good luck!

Chevy has a ton of modifications your can make for this engine. Go to your Chevy dealer and pick up their performance catalog. Cost is around 15 bucks. A few things you want to do to start will is junk that old 1 Bbl carburetor and manifold, put on a 4 bbl intake and carb. This will increase your HP an additional 40 HP. Improve the exhaust flow out of the engine will help as well. They also have better cams, valves, springs, exhaust manifold, and other modifications. Better pistons. All this is in the Chevy performance catalog. You can also check out some of the performance sites to see what they have to offer. summit racing is good to check out.

You do it on paper, like the factory does. For instance if you have 250 ft. lbs of torque at 5000 rpm you develop 238 hp. If you have the same torque at 5100 rpm you will have 247 hp. Thats how they get all that hp on those car commercials. You will notice no one says brake hp which is the true measure. This is the ultimate money saver for more hp. Just increase the rpm. The TORQUE is what you want to increase for more power. If you have more torque you can increase your gear ratio .
