HEADS UP, PEOPLE!!!

Treason is not a crime which would be punished by impeachment. The penalty for treason, is at the very least imprisonment, and in some (past?) cases death.

THINK IT THROUGH!!!

Neither Bill Clinton nor Richard Nixon were charged with or guilty of the crime of treason.

Ok, so I may have been wrong! But now the question is if impeachment is the means/procedure of prosecution, what should be the punishment? Would it be enough that the person who is commissioned with the greatest responsibility to the United States Constitution, should bear a penalty less than that experienced by previously charged with that crime?

Any citizen of the United States is subject to its laws regardless of his job or his profession.

A president who committed murder, for example, would be arrested and charged with murder, and if found guilty, would go to jail.

It has been awhile since I was last in law school, but impeachment simply means that Congress tries to "fire" the president by removing him from office because he has committed "high crimes or misdemeanors". I assume that treason would fall within this definition.

===edit===

BTW, people forget that President Andrew Johnson was impeached (put on trial) but was acquitted.

"High crimes and misdemeanors" are punishable by impeachment. (Nixon was not impeached. He resigned. Clinton was impeached but not convicted.)
