I'm 16 and work at a preschool. In the afternoons, however, there are also some kindergarteners and 1st grade. I'm in charge of them. There are usually about 5-6 kids in my group. I've decided that I want to do themes. All the activities we do will be based on those themes. For example, if the theme is nature, then we'll do some word games having to do with nature. And we might go on a nature walk or something. Things like that. I need some more ideas of themes. I have quite a few like sports, animals, nature, circus, etc. What are some other possibilties I could do? All answers would be greatly appreciated. Best answer with most good ideas gets 10 pts.

You could do a color theme. Meaning you choose a color of the day, and all of your activities are based on that. Take red for example, you may play I Spy; you could have them build something using only red legos, red playdoh, etc.
A construction theme is always fun, and you could throw in planes, trains, and automobiles.
Oceans, zoos. You could also have a Patriotic theme.
You could even do a letter theme. Every activity you do has to begin with that letter.

Here are a few:
Crazy about cookies theme
1) Who Me? Yes, You!
Cut out 5-6 circles for cookies and write the students names on them. Place them in a container (cookie jar). The children chant Who took the cookie from the cookie jar? She then pulls a cookie out of the jar, identifies the name, continues the chant using the child's name and the 'chosen one' says, who me? couldn't be. then who?continue in same manner.
2)Rolling out the dough
make some pretend cookie dough (very simple)
3 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
1tbsp veggie oil Mix together
throw in some rolling pins & cookie cutters
3) Cookies on the move
Make different shape cookies out of sheets of craft foam (gingerbread men, stars etc.) place them on a cookie sheet and let them use a spatula to move the cookies from the sheet to a cooling rack.
4) read a cookie book-- If you give a mouse a cookie by Laura Numeroff

Think of stuff kids like doing. Don't be too general that way they can learn more.
Instead of general like nature try
-seasons
-forest animals
-rainforest animals
Since Halloween is coming up, you could do Halloween. Any holiday that isn't religion based.
Just try more specific stuff, that way you have a HUGE range of things.
-Try a lot of "what would you find in..." themes.
"What would you find in..."
-the city
-the beach
-the kitchen
-the playground
etc. Hope that helped.

As a retired pre-school teacher, perhaps I may help. Themes like history, names, how was it made, how do you think it was made, can you spell it, what it's for,how did it get here, how old is it--kids love to know why.(It makes them feel stronger to be smarter.)
