Greek Myths are all that’s left of the ancient Greek religion. About 1200 b.c.e., the residents of, what we would call, Greece and Asia Minor shared a common belief in a group of deities that came to be known as The Olympians.

Myths were something which evolved over time. It is not possible to give a finite date because they are part of a continuum of the culture.
E.g. many names from Greek mythology are found on ancient Mycenaean tablets -- the culture which preceded the Greek civilisation. However, we don't know anything of their myths, since writing at that time was only used for making lists.
But the greatest of the Greek epics, such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and the rest of the mythic cycle, achieved their height in the 8th and 7th centuries B.C. However, this was the just the period of high refinement, not when they originated.
Some myths emerged in historical times and these can be dated, but most are prehistoric, and were passed down from one generation to the next by word of mouth in the age before writing was first introduced to the region.

People say they are false but I think part of it was real. I mean is not so hard to believe. The problem is that Greeks liked to add up stuff to legends. Like saying that things were caused by a certain Olympian god. Like the Trojan wars. It was too big of an event to have been fake and Achilles DIED. Why would anyone kill the hero? Also I don't think they would make Hector run around the walls like a coward. A real story teller would make Hector as brave or braver than the hero to make the opponent seem tougher. It was real! The problem is that they add stuff to it and now a days people think they are false because of the mysticism in the writings. Like for example. It is said that Achilles was killed by a arrow. That is the story. But the poets made it more fabulous with their addition saying that he was immortal and only had one weakness, the heel. And they say that Paris aimed his bow high but Apollo (Sun god) derailed the arrow and made it hit Achilles' weak-spot.. I've even read that it was actually Apollo himself who shot the arrow while Paris was hesitating. They just add all those things, but if you are able to read between the lines I believe you can get to the true story of what happen in those times :D Why are they important? Because those were the days of champions when you could see heroes and live a life of adventures, EVERYONE has a hero inside and having knowledge and evidence that these people most likely existed gives people hope of becoming like them xD Hercules - A strong man with incredible strength but great misfortunes Achilles - A swift and smart warrior who seek to be legendary. Just read between the lines and you shall get to the truth of it all :)

The "myths" were holy truths until the Christians accepted by Emperor Constantine began converting Gods and Godesses into Demons, Greek and Roman holy Canon into Mythos. Those who tried to hold to their religion were outlawed and the word Paganus was used for those that were ablle to escape to the woods and mountains.

I think around the time man first appeared on Greek islands, they needed a reason for everything, and have been told eversince. The fact that they actually had to swim or sail out there means that they had to evolve a lil bit so about say 200-400 years since man appeared on earth, it would take a long time to get from Mesopotamia to Greece.
