I was wondering if there was a good gaming laptop (not too dated either) out there that would also perform well as a normal college-work-type computer. I can fork over up to $3,000.

Wow! That could buy a real gaming laptop. Consider the Alienware m9750. Get the one with dual graphics in SLI mode.

All a gaming rig means is that it is faster and better then a regular computer, so a gaming laptop will definitely be able to handle anything that you throw at it with a word processor or something for college. I would suggest going on pricegrabber and looking at good laptops there, cuz for 3K you could get a seriously good laptop

Just look for a laptop with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, and minimum 160GB Hard drive @ 5400 or 7200 RPM

Those are very good prerequisits for a laptop which will excel.

The Toshiba X205 would be a good choice. Comes with a NV8700 and loads of bells and whistles for under 2000. Great for multimedia as well.
