1. The subtitle refers to the Daethly Hallows and searches for them either all together or individually. Within the novel there is a wizarding world fairy tale called "The Three Brothers" that tells of how they cheated death out of their deaths and he rewards them with three incredibly powerful magic items that he expected would lead to their deaths. The most powerful wand ever made out of an elder branch (the Elder wand) given to the eldest brother which quickly leads to his death, a stone to bring the dead back (the resurrection stone) which caused him to go mad and commit suicide when he could not be with the person he brought back, and Death's own invisibility cloak which would let one hide from Death (Harry's invisibility cloak) which actually allowed the youngest of the three brothers to live a nice long life and he passed it on to his son when he was ready to die. The belief is whoever has all three Hallows all together will become the master of death.

Dumbledore later explains to Harry that the idea that the Deathly Hallows came from Death himself may just be the fairy tale itself, but as Harry already knows the Deathly Hallows themselves are real. Harry's invisibility cloak is unlike anyother invisibility cloak as all others loose the ability to make their owners become invisible over time. Harry's never looses that ability. Dumbledore, in a rather sneaky way to prevent the Ministry of Magic from keeping it from him, gave Harry the resurrection stone which he used to call back the spirits of four of the most important people to him (Dumbledore wasn't one of them). And the Elder wand, Dumbledore's own wand, was something Voldemort took from Dumbledore's grave in order to defeat Harry. Dumbledore explains that he believes the three Peverell brothers were three extremely gifted brothers who created the Hallows themselves rather than recieving them from Death.

2. The title is very important to the story. Voldemort begins searching for the most powerful possible wand to defeat Harry with, the Elder wand. And Harry needs the other two Hallows to help him be able to defeat Voldemort.

3. Once you learn what they are, then yes it's appropriate.

4. Wouldn't change the title.

1 The deathly hallows are the three magical items
death gave to three young wizards
a stone that cures all ills
a cape that can hide the wearer from anyone even death itself
and a wand that makes the person undefeatable once they
are the true wielder

2 YES it is these three items that are being sought by
both sides throughout the series and alluded too in various ways THAT Was why Voldemort craved the Philosophers Stone...

3 Yes it is the title denotes the importance of the quest that harry finds himself in, a race to find the items before voldemort and the actual battle of Hogwarts, the War and the battle with Voldemort really take up less of the story than the search and finding of the Deathly Hallows themselves

4 Harry Potter at Mysteries End

I love the title. It's the Hallows that give Harry the stength to overcome everything he must face and help to get his life to "normal." Like Harry said, it was a war of Hallows vs. Horcruxes.
