Because you like Elton John (how could you not!!) I would recommend Ben Folds Five (or just Ben Folds all by himself). He plays the piano and sings beautiful songs as well, ranging from catchy to foot-tapping to thoughtful.
I love the band Nickelcreek (NOT to be confused with Nickel Back!!!) They are a bluegrassy band (not twangy or anything). Listen to "Ode to a Butterfly" (a great instrumental) or "Lighthouse's Tail."
How about Badly Drawn Boy? They are kind of mellow, very melodic...
My dad likes Weezer :) Anything from the "Blue Album" is great. "My Name is Jonas" is one of my favorite songs ever.
Jack Johnson is a mellow singer-songwriter. Most of his songs remind me of summer and cheer me up :)
If you like the jam-band sound, check out Phish. Run Like an Antelope is my favorite.
The Postal Service is one of my favorite groups... they have an electronic sound but it's absolutely beautiful.
Brett Dennen is also one of my favorites. He is another singer-songwriter that is just fabulous.
My dad is also 51 and he likes "Daughter" by Pearl Jam a lot. He likes some Foo Fighters, too (who are coming out wiht a new album soon !!)
You must be cool 51 year old, its awesome that you are looking for new music. It's kind of funny, though, because I listen to a lot of Zeppelin, Steve Miller Band, Bob Dylan, Hendrix, etc.... Anyways, I hope there is at least one thing on this list that you enjoy!!!
ps: Counting Crows and Smashing Pumpkins!! haha this is the third time I have edited this post!

I love Elton
I have never heard of Rooney but then again I live in Canada
My suggestions to you are
1. No doubt
2. Pink
3. Kylen Porter not to sure on the first name spelling
finally I suggestion is to find a Radio Station in your area that plays newer music and find some songs that you like from that learn the names and purchase those Cd's
Once you have decided on music that you like , tell the sales person at the music store and they should be able to help you

Try Porcupine Tree, modern Prog rock at its best.
and Radiohead.
If you want a really upbeat band like Rooney and more to Rooney's style try The Vines an The Thrills
If you like Allman Brothers, you might want to (if you don't already) try the Grateful Dead, Phish, Free and Bad Company
If you like ELO, you might like Edgar Winters

ELO- try The Apples in Stereo. Find a tune called "Same Old Drag". You'll hear vocal harmonies/arrangements that'd make Jeff Lynne proud.
Allman Brothers Band- try Gov't Mule. Very similar jam band.

You should try: Matchbox 20 / Rob Thomas (lead singer of Matchbox 20), James Blunt, Rascal Flatts, 3 Doors Down, Nickelback, & Maroon 5.
I like a lot of those same artists so I think you would enjoy the ones I listed.

Try Maroon Five. I'm 48 and their music hit the right notes for me. There are bands out there now which you might find to be along your musical tastes. Recently heard a new one by a group called "The Paperboys." I think it's called "I fall down with you". It's on You tube as are many others.

if You like the Eagles, check out a band called storyville. they sound damn close. the Allman brothers are, hard to match but Lynyrd Skynyrd, still makes new music and, a lot of the newer country, sounds like southern rock.
personally, at the risk of sounding uncool, I keep buying the classics, too. My son is 27 and, since He was a teen, He has thought Led Zepplin 4 was, one of the greatest albums, ever made.
