You can not educate someone who hardly understands. Neither can you educate someone who thinks he knows everything.
But, don't you find it easier to instill new insights still unknown to people than to revise insights to a person who ALREADY have OTHER strongly built ideas--and believe that they are the RIGHT ONES?
If taken in the perspective of Socrates---"Wisest is he who knows that he does not know"---the arrogant people are the harder ones to educate.
Arrogant people = they know that they know.
And if you really look at the world today, there are more people who know that they know. NOT THINK that they know but KNOW that they know.
And if you still come to think of it, aren't smart asses also educated fools as well? The fact that they are SMART @$$E$ made them EDUCATED FOOLS. (and smart is synonymous to educated while @$$e$ is also synonymous to fools.)
Hope I helped.

The most common people are "educated" fools; these are persons who view themselves as educated but actually are not educated enough to educate others, and in this way they also are what you call the smart @$$e$. Educated fools cannot exist, for fools are persons who falsely deem themselves already educated before they even learn to define education. It is the foolish people who tend to be the most arrogant of all people. In fact, the hardest people to educate are the foolish people because they are too arrogant to recognize that they are not already educated and so they see no need for an education. The foolish people fail to see arrogance where it actually is--in themselves, while they spot arrogance where it actually is not. The foolish people see arrogance where they refuse to see strength, and they mistaken strength for arrogance and weakness for humility, and deem their weaknesses as signs of their greater education. Hence, the foolish people who are also the "smart @$$e$" are the most difficult to educate.

The foolish people are easier to educate- they're simply stupid and need some guidance and education. Now the arrogant people are harder to educate since they could be smart or dumb, but because of their arrogance would not learn much.
Doesn't matter which is more common- what you are is what you are.

The arrogant person is a fool who thinks he knows it all and doesn't need anyone else in any way shape or form, esp not to teach them anything. A fool makes poor choices based on lack of information. An educated fool makes poor choices based upon arrogance or pride. Neither can be taught unless they choose to learn. Teaching arrogant fools is like holding a stop sign before an avalanche. Nice thought, not very productive and could threaten you life.

The fool is difficult to teach, while the arrogant person refuses to learn. It is more difficult to educate the arrogant. There are many educated fools, but "smart@$$" refers to something other than the educated arrogant ones - who are very difficult to find.

It's harder to educate the arrogant. The foolish can learn, the arrogant don't want to.

I think it is needless to educate.
But then, if we really are so superior compared to them, i think we are the ones who need to be educated.
But since you ask this question, i would like to think ...
Between the foolishness and arrogance,
I think is arrogance, coz foolishness doesnt mean that you cannt take in what people tell you. It is just that you are slow and be more difficult to learn.
However, if he is an arrogant one, he would never accept what being told. That is harder to educate in my humble opinion.

An arrogant person would seemingly be more difficult to educate because of possible unwillingness to accept some teaching. But, a foolish person is more likely to squander the opportunity just as much because of his foolishness.

i think it is harder to educate arrogant people because they would think that they already know everything, and is not needed to be taught by someone else. Also, they will not admit that they don't know everything. They're pompous. While on the other side, foolish people would actually think about what othes say, and maybe listen.
