Once and for all can we get over this myth that only humans and one or two other animals have sex for pleasure. Most species have sex for pleasure which is why they do it. They do not know that the sex act produces offspring but they do enjoy the process.

Why would so many species copulate many many times if they didn't enjoy it? It only takes one act to produce young. Lions, for instance, do it every 30 minutes for three days.

Many animals masturbate. Male elephants rub themselves against rocks or tree stumps. Young male elephant seals use each other or rocks. If there was no pleasure in it, they wouldn't do it.

Do Animals Masturbate

YES, lots of mammals masturbate (monkeys being a great example). Birds, at least males, seem to also (owned many a male bird that has used a perch or soft toy to get his thing on). As far as insects I doubt it, I don't think they'd have the brain power to enjoy the stimulation that well, but then again I don't think too many people really watch insects that closely to tell for sure.

For sure! We are not the only animals that do it, and I must say, even some animals have sex for pleasure, like some species of monkeys. Masturbation is natural in a lot of species. :)

I've seen monkeys in the zoo having a good time with themselves. Also, I used to have two male cockatiels and the younger one used to do it up agains a plastic perch. I somehow don't think insects do, but then anything is possible.

Masturbation is common among mammals, particularly chimps. They do it just like how your perhaps imagining it, like humans do. Sometimes they also do it in groups. There's even a particular tree branch commonly used by female chimps to... you know.

Deers, I guess, rub their antlers in trees to stimulate themselves.

I'm not quite sure with birds and insects though. They might not be that intelligent enough to enjoy non-reproductive sexual pleasures.

One day, when I was in college, I somehow ended up in a strange house with a strange girl and a monkey in a cage.

The girl and I had sex in front of the monkey. We didn't know whose monkey it was or how it got there. It was kind of weird because the monkey was watching us so intently, but we figured it was just a monkey... then he started masturbating while looking at us having sex.

It was the 'sixties so we let the monkey have his fun too. We decided not to put a blanket over his cage.

Who knew that monkeys not only masturbated but that they liked porn too?

This is a true story. Those of you who think monkeys do not masturbate, look at mirthman's answer below, and some other answers - we've SEEN it!

Okay - from YouTube - it's short but unmistakable - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3xbc_lRHck

Yup... I believe they do.

It's going to be different with each type of animal... monkeys use their hands just like people do ... dogs & cats lick themselves... I'm not sure about insects or birds.

I am sure Big Bird of Sesame Street does. It only has one working hand, where is the other hand all the time?

Birds yes. My pet cockatiel would rub himself against his perch until he gave a peep and sat upright. Dogs are well known for doing it by"humping" someone's leg. Ashley how the hell do you know who gets pleasure and who doesn't.
