The sound card 'thingie' produces sound when it's working .
Sounds like yours ain't.
If your speakers are External ensure you are plugged in correctly and power is On.
If your speakers are Internal Do Dis:

You'll need your laptop Driver disk in the CD drive, Right click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, Find the Sound card driver Device in the list, double click on it and Update the driver from the CD.

Good Luck

If it was working beforehand, try going into the driver details (by right clicking and selecting Properties on My Computer, finding device manager, and double click the sound card) and try rolling back the driver to the older version. It could be a sneaky windows update that has updated the driver but rendered it useless in the mean time. (And yes, it has happened to me before)

try isolate the problem to this way
first make sure hardware is fine to do that first shutdown the computer
and then hold down the Fn key and while holding down the Fn key push the power button to turn on the computer this will take your computer to hardware diags here there would be
LCD detection test which should give beeps indicate internal spks are fine ,if you hear beeps let the test run but dont run the complete memory test ignore that test and if havent wiped our computer then it should go hardware diags present on your hard drive he do the custom test on sound
this will play music one odd test may fail on it ,ignore that if heard music then its the software ,
