OK Yay Area, after reading the answers you've received and from a few people I have chosen as contacts I can see they have not read your profile. You have 14% best answers and like me, you do not know the answer to your question and I respect you for asking it.
Your question can almost be equaled to a draft, better yet when I joined the Air Force after high school "76" people who were convicted of crimes that should of done some serious JAIL time were given the option to chose to do jail time or to join the military. It took way too many years for the military to learn the hard way-- not to accept criminals--.
Our troops at war have too many problems to send some of our societies know problem people for them to baby-sit. It would be very hard while fighting a war and protecting your brothers and sisters from the enemy to add a criminal to your watch list to protect, when you know they would not cover your ***.
Answering your question with respect, please consider my question; why both sides of the polls on this war in Iraq are avoiding the main problem, maybe a 15 year old can help these old folks see the main problem;
Why not use Blackwater to exclusively guard the treacherous borders used for arms and drug smuggling? This is how the terrorists receive most of their funding. Afghanistan presently supplies 93% of the heroin world wide.
This war on terror which includes Iraq will find closure when both sides on this issue of the war in Iraq admit-- see the reality-- that the Taliban, Al Qaeda, Bin Laden, the drug cartels and all terrorists presently holds a very, very LARGE LEVERAGE over the US by supplying illegal drugs worldwide. By keeping these drugs “illegal” we are making them RICH and POWERFULL, it is costing tax payers a fortune while our government and law enforcement is also making a large profit on this “illegal drug market”.
Aside from stopping the funding of terrorists by making these drugs legal, our only other option is to employ those like Blackwater to secure these treacherous borders.

In my opinion It's sort of a good idea, but may be corrupt and wrong because once they go to jail they are no longer treated as people anymore. Once in jail, there treated as convicts against the law, and if they do go to war it would be wrong for recognizing their success in war but ignoring their past. True there wouldn't be drafts if the U.S use them for war purposes, but yet again if they do serve the army we'll be having chaos, and mental murders out in the streets again. It's only a good idea only if they cooperate, follow orders, and get the job done. This is a very good and important question, it may solve the problem with the draft among teenagers , but it's hard to even trust the inmates of prisons. It will take alot of training, discipline and hard work to get their heads straight.

While in "theory" you suggestion would seem on target but, soldiers are trained for more than just killing.. They are trained to think and react on their feet and save lives as well as take lives of those who mean harm. Having hardened criminals just wouldn't be right. Also, it probably on a certain level is against their "civil liberties". I would LOVE to see prison reform- take away the cable television, free time and other freebies.. I would LOVE to see them work, sweat and do something besides get a free college education. My step-father is a retired Green Beret that served his country in Vietnam. He's NOT some two bit criminal. He did what he felt was right in a time of war. I think having criminals serve is NOT what the military is about although, I think if the prison system took on a military feeling.. There would be less criminals returning.

Well the army isn't like Hollywood and the Dirty Dozen. Most convicted murderers could never submit to the discipline and obedience required of a soldier. They would cause more harm than good, that's for sure, unless of course they totally rehabilitated after serving their time.

lol. Thats funny. But its just so un-realistic...haha good idea though.
The problem is imagine how many problems these people (convicted criminals) would give? Attempts at escaping, some kind of mass suicide....who knows really!? I say lets keep our military as a defensive one, and quit wasting our resources on fighting this imaginary war on terrorism.

I don't think so. First of all, you're assuming that those convicted of murder "like killing people". That's not necessarily true. Secondly, people who find themselves convicted of murder are likely far from the caliber of those who are successful in the military. Lastly, as noble as it seems to give these people a "chance to earn their freedom back" you'd be cramming them in with straight-up, law-abiding, discipline-oriented soldiers. Unfortunately, that would mix like oil & water.

Well, not a good idea, really. Murderers generally kill unarmed, innocent people & children whom they kill for their money, wife, husband, land or rape, etc. These people could not be trusted in basic training, they would just run away! Perhaps killing others in their flight for freedom. Better go back to the drawing board on this one.

You know we had a discussion on this in class once and it sound great until you actually think out everything. What will stop a criminal from turning on his own country in exchange for some money...what would stop them from straying or from doing their job....I thank those who would willingly sacrifice themselves for our rights and our freedoms. I put trust in them, because they made a choice. I don't know if sending extreme criminals to fight this war or to fight for our country would be a bad idea, because unfortunately we have a lot of people out there who will turn on us for some cream...

You have to understand, your giving people guns who absolutely hate law and order. It would be madness trying to command a bunch of societies outlaws. Definitely could be possible, but extremely unlikely.
