Am I the only wone who thought this show was totally bizarro?
I work with kids and as interesting as the show was, I found myself saying, "Yeah, right!" numberous times. I mean, I was wondering just how close by adults were as these kids were going to sleep in the dark, on the floor... and lighting wood cookstoves... I believe kids are capable of amazing things, but is this pushing it? Or am I jaded?
What do you all think?

Within spitting distance are: a nutritionist, a child psychologist, a pediatrician, and a general practitioner. The camera crews are more than 60 adults at all times. Moms and Dads are called by producers once or twice a week to let them know how their kids are doing.
These kids face more hardships when they have to wash the family dog. You are not jaded.

I was ready to really hate this show. I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it!
As with every show I watch, I tend to have favorites and not-so-favorites. My favs so far are : Council member Laurel (12 yr old with red hair) and 14 yr old Michael (not a council member.. he is the kid with long hair who made the speech at the first meeting where Mike lost control of the room.. got all the kids rallied around the council again) and 14 yr old Sophia (first cook, gold star winner for first week)
My no-so-favs are: 11 yr old Mike and 10 yr old Taylor, both Council members. Mike needs to chill out a little. He is not the boss, just an advisor. Taylor needs to shut her pretty little beauty pagent mouth and go home already. Quit whining!
(and do those dishes!!)
I also agree about the numerous adults around. Of course they aren't going to just abandon kids in a ghost town. The adults are very close by in case of emergency, but an emergency would not be lighting a stove. I don't think this is pushing the kids to try to excel at impossible tasks. I think they may really be able to pull this off.
This should be quite interesting. I sense a takeover of council duties coming up in the next few episodes!

I think it is a great concept - and not far removed from recent history. Up to the early 1900's kids were often left to fend for themselves and be responsible for their home and even siblings - working the farm, tending the animals and even repairing the fence and reinforcing the stables and barns. Kids can do more than adults allow and I believe it is the lack of responsibility that is responsible for the down turn in society. If kids had responsibility they would grow up to be responsible adults and we would have a more responsible society instead of these "reality shows" that only give us a glimpse of human potential.

kids are generally tougher when other kids are around - nobody wants to look like a "baby"..
it appeared there were some lights in the room.
As far as lighting the stoves go - they did have instructions.. and many kids who live on farms and in rural areas do this on their own... they get off the school bus and have to light the wood stove because parents are at work
heck I know one lady who when she was 10 came home regularly to find a note : kill 2 roosters and wash them 10 times... she didnt think anything of doing this
Kids today who grow up in cities are basically morons when it comes to "REAL" things.

All these kids were extensively screened by the producers and psychologists so they would get well adjusted and capable kids. It seems possible that they could find 40 kids who are very competent.

I loved the show. But, of course their are cameramen and directors right next to the kids all the time. I don't know really though, its hard to say!

i really find this interesting, I mean, you've got to realize that yes, no matter what the previews say, there is always going to be some sort of safety net, but I wonder how far from disaster this safety net is being held.

I think it's a great show, and it's amazing what they can all do. Some "Adults" can't even survive that. God bless them.

I refuse to watch it after I heard about three of the kids drinking bleach water.
