Yes, that's true to some extent. One of the best examples is Alexander the Great. When he wrote accounts of his battles he would double the size of the enemy army and only count half his own men. And our common opinions of most groups in history have come down to us from those who conquered them. However, with better archaeological practices and new discoveries, we are getting a better view of both sides in many cases.

it's ironic you should attribute that quote to Alex Haley who made up and plagiarized "Roots"
