Okay,
I have a 1998 Ford Explorer. 4.0 engine.
The check gage light came on, the needle was on H.
I flushed the radiater. And put in new fluid.
Still runs hot. When I go to cut the car on in the morning the needle is on cold, then after driving about 5mins it goes to the middle where it always is, then after 10mins it goes to the H, then it goes between the middle and H, so I would say still hot.It stays that way for a while then repeats everything over again.I only speed up to about 45mph or slower, I haven't tried to go over. I cut the A/C off, but makes no difference if I run it or not, still heats up.Do I need a new thermostat or what?? Everything under the hood sounds the same to me.Could it a be leak? Please Help!! Thanks.

thermostat, radiator flush and clutch fan in that order back yard mechanics never flush the system..when a car is run hot like yours the impurity's drop out of the water and stick to everything they can grab onto boilers have the same problems that's why they have to be blown down regularly
about 35 bucks for the flush and about the same for a thermostat

It could be a thermostat that is not opening completely. When the engine gets real hot, it jams open the t-stat until the system cools down a bit, then sticks mostly closed again.
Also, did you change the thermostat recently? The system will behave this way if put in backwards (upside down).
Also does the electric radiator fan run, trying to cool this hot engine down? A broken fan or thermostatic ON/OFF switch will also express the behavior you describe.
My advice is to get this resolved before you cook your engine. Also, after you get this straightened out, immediately change the oil & filter.

Ok this is same symptons as my patrol. I changed everything. with litle to no results.

I changed

Thermostate
Clutch Fan
Fan
Put Thermo fan on
Flushed Radiator
Put Extra Hot Coolant in
Changed and flushed engine oil
etc

Go and get the core of the radiator cleaned, flushing will not work, mine was blocked 20-30% after cleaning its 100times better.

Its cheap to get done.

Are the fans running? Are they running in the right direction? I had a similar problem, and it turned out the fan was wired wrong, it was pushing air toward the front of the car instead of toward the engine so it would over heat when at a red light but would be fine driving down the road, because when driving down the road it would force the air toward the engine.

toymod the only one with any sense. Go to a RADIATOR SHOP, not an auto repair, And get your radiator checked and probably cleaned. NEVER flush a radiator. All you accomplish is stirring up all the sediment in the system and force it into the water passages ib the radiator.

Mostlikely the thermostat. Have you checked the water pump? If you change the thermostat and you still have problems I would check the water pump and hose.

Sounds like either the water pump is bad or your thermostat is stuck.
