I think it is because the diet soda uses nutrasweet rather than actual sugar. I have a diet pepsi and a regular pepsi right here. The diet contains no sugars while the regular contains 41 grams of sugar. Using the density equation of (mass/volume) you can conclude that 41g/12 fluid ounces has a greater density than 0g/ 12 fluid ounces. I hole this helps.

Because the regular (non-diet) drink contains sugar which takes up more room. Diet drinks are made from concentrated artificial sweeteners. Compare one packet of sweet-n-low = 2 tsp. of sugar. One packet of sweet-n-low is 1/2 a tsp., therefore in volume is less.
I don't know if that's right, but that would be my best guess. I hope you can understand what I am trying to tell you in this answer.

The high fructose corn syrup. It makes regular soda thicker than diet soda (which only has chemicals added to make it taste sweet.)
