I bought a laptop fan from Walmart for about $20. It goes below the laptop, uses power from the USB and has two additional fans that keep the laptop cool for hours on end.

Actually using a laptop on one's lap is a bad idea... Most laptops get pretty hot, as you've noticed.

Try getting one of those little folding trays, like the ones you'd use for eating in bed and put the laptop on that. Besides keeping the laptop off your lap, this will allow the laptop to breathe, and will put the keyboard in a better position for you anyways.

Bed Bath & Beyond has one that's made of wood and plastic for like $10. it's large enough for any laptop, and has some extra space on the side for a small mouse, or a trackball.

Common problem. I picked up an Antec cooler for $9.99 (after rebates). I watch the Sunday paper ads very closely and have gotten some pretty good deals. There are usually an abundance of deals around holidays.
