Dell is fantastic for customs. Just choose your own parts, and they'll make it for you.

I love Dell! I have had many laptops and many desktops and I would highly recommend Dell. I have desktop now that my kids use now that is about 8 years old! I have never had any serious problem with it at all!
It's hard to recommend a laptop to someone when you don't know how much they want to spend or what the primary use of it will be but overall I do recommend Dell and you can get it customized to your needs.
Here is an article on CNET listing their editors' 5 best laptops and the Dell XPS M1330 is listed as one of them.

Yes, Dell is a good company to deal with. I have two Dell PCs. However, I need to "get a deal" to satisfy myself and recently purchased a Toshiba laptop. I feel you can get a lemon at any time from any manufacturer. As important as price is good support.
Why don't you figure out what you need and want, then look around. Also, watch your paper for ads - especially on weekends and most especially near holidays. I got my Toshiba for $399 with a free printer - a weekend special with limited supplies at the store.
