"Well, you did what you thought you had to do. I'm sorry it turned out so badly for you. Is there anything I can do to help?"

He'll get the hint... and you won't have been a nasty friend by saying something that could hurt their feelings... and instead will offer to help again...

Try to do it in a respectful way WITHOUT those worlds, atleast thats the goal. Sometimes a look (thats what I've used, they tell me the story, I give them I TOLD YOU SO look) or a simple remind them of the day, something like

What did she do to you? That reminds me of conversation we had back in such and such time.

You lost it again, yea thats a surprise..... remember that one time, yea I tried to tell you!

Its just, be respectful buddy, try and be "soft" about it, and remember its not about being able to "I told you so" him, its about HOPFULLY making your friend stronger, thats the goal.
