I have 4 ram slots and I was wondering if I should keep the two 512s or just have the 2gb sticks on dual channel? (mind you, I don't know much about this)

Keep the 512mb x2! I am assuming that you have a 32 bit XP or 32 bit Vista OS. They both can read approximately 4 gigs of RAM. However, if you exceed 4 gigs of RAM, the OS gets all wonky and it slows the system down.

Thus, you are looking at a total of approximately 3gb of RAM. Now, how much memory to you have on your video card? As long as it is not over 1gb, there should be no problems. If there is a problem and your system starts running slower, try pulling out one stick of 512 to see if the system improves. (Too much memory is a bad thing, as explained above.)

Your motherboard should have no problem with the memory. If I may suggest, try to make sure that the memory you are looking at is Dual Channel. This will allow your 1gb x2 sticks to work together a little bit better and faster.

Now, if the system doesn't boot when you insert the memory, try re-seating the memory. If that doesn't solve your problem, booting with only one stick. If the computer will boot with one stick but not the second, then the second stick may be bad. RMA that one and get it replaced.

Good luck!

Your device could run extremely speedier with a sixty 4 bit os yet, there are nevertheless some courses and, units which will in basic terms artwork with a 32 bit os. i've got been working XP sixty 4 for it sluggish now. the only difficulty i've got extremely encountered is with my instantaneous adaptor.
