If I remember correctly, a renaissance man is a term used to describe someone who excels in different fields (like someone who's good in academics but also good in sports, arts and crafts, mechanical things, et cetera). It's like the "jack-of-all-trades" sort of person.

Recall that the time of the Renaissance (16th century) was the period in history wherein different discoveries and innovations from all sorts of fields (from the sciences to literature) arose and flourished, bringing forth into existence much of the things only the ancient mind can imagine. And during this time, there would probably be no other best example of a renaissance man than Leonardo da Vinci. He's a painter, a sculptor, an architect, a scientist, and an engineer.

Compared to the renaissance man, the average person usually excels in probably a few things. The renaissance man on the other hand masters more things (in a rather more diverse range) as compared to the average Joe. That's what makes a renaissance man truly one of a kind.

Most renaissance men are deceased. Gone are the days when you could paint a fresco of the last supper in the morning, illustrate a text on anatomy in the afternoon then invent the helicopter or the submarine in the evening before composing a poem in high Latin upon retiring to bed. Advances in knowledge and technology have made specialists of us all, with scant time to look outward beyond the narrow confines of our own disciplines....Good Innit!

Renaissance people have found an underlying unity in all the creative efforts they pursue. It is this discovery that leads them to become what they are, because an advance in one field leads to a discovery in another. For them, mastering different skills is not a matter of dividing their energy - it is all part of one skill set that is fueled by their passion. This passion, and the discovery of the unity of all creative endeavors - is what distinguishes them from the 'average person'.
