I have a 2000 Hyundai Accent. For the last month there is a very loud humming noise coming from the right side of my car. When I turn left the noise disappears, when I turn right the noise intensifies. I had a mechanic friend of mine look at the car. He said my brakes and axel look great. He replaced a bearing leading to my tire. He was sure this is what was making the noise. Well it didn't work. The noise is still there. He is certain that its not my engine (the belts and hoses are in good shape). He thinks that when I had my transmission replaced in May that the mechanic may have done something to the undercarriage, when the transmission was dropped.. My friend doesn't do transmission work so he can't help. Does anyone have any ideas???? Has this ever happened to anyone???

My tire on the right side is bald, because of the bearing that had to be replaced. Can this noise be from a bald tire? I planned on replacing it anyway.

Yes, the noise is likely your tire. You can rotate the tire to the rear on the other side and see if the noise goes away.
Probably the belt in the tire has gone bad resulting in spotty baldness and the humming noise.
You may also want to get your alignment checked, as being out of alignment can result in bald tires and bad bearings.

A bad bearing will not make your tire go bald, you need to get 2 new tires for the front and have the car aligned and I believe your noise is still a bad wheel bearing, maybe on the other side that you didn't replace.

Replace the tires and get an alignment. The alignment will come with a complete inspection that should find anything wrong under the car.
And quit listening to the mechanic friend who replaces parts on a guess and tells you it's fixed when it isn't.

I'm not an expert, but another point of view, it may be when the mechanic installed the transmission, one of your motor mounts may not have been installed properly and the motor may be moving when you turn, causing the pulleys or belt to rub the side of the engine compartment. I've never worked on a Hyundai, but i had a similar problem with a ford tempo.

I think that the original diagnosis was correct and all you did was replace the wrong one. Tire noise does not go away or even change that much when you steer but bearings always do. Change the other bearing and your noise will be gone!

First replace the bad tire, second check the fluid in you power steering unit turning left it might intensify the amount of fluid needed, turning right it might depreciate it. Just a thought.
