Actually a wood that you connect to is ideal for making the discs for your Runes. Such a wood will readily impart their familiars energies as you use them and you WILL feel more rapport with Runes made out of a wood that you connect to.
I prefer Runes made out of tumbled river stones from the river near here. I have an afinity for that place and the stones EACH "called out" to me quite some time ago. They are AL uniform sized, white Quartz stones that were naturally polished from many years of being tumbled in the river. One added advantage, as they were already in flowing water that was exposed to moonlight, they were ALREADY cleansed of ALL negative energies. this made them perfect to use straight away after carving the symbols onto them.

I say use the materials you connect with the most to make your personal tools.
The only concerns might be in the actually crafting of them - splintering of the wood, how long it will last, etc.
Cut the wood you need, and let it dry and age for a few months. Then make your runes. Green wood won't work well.

You can use whatever material you feel comfortable with.
Personally, I love the feel and energy of small stones that have been worn smooth and round by the power of our beautiful Great Lakes. I can spend hours walking up and down the shoreline collecting these stones. They range in size from a dime to a quarter. I collect hundreds at a time. Then, when I get home, I sort them by size and make my own runes from them. I have found (and have been told) that the ones I make from stones "work" just as well as ones made of wood.

Use whatever you connect with. Just remember, whatever you use, do not forcefully take. Make sure to connect the carved runes to your own energies as well. It can be done in a variety of ways, the easiest of which is to use your blood to outline/highlight/paint on etc the runes.
Something to avoid is burning the runes on, as it adds harmful overtones to the energies of the wood.

Speaking as Godhi of the Norse tradition, it is specified that the staves are to be etched in the wood of a fruit bearing tree.
Speaking as a long time practicing arborist, it bears remembering that ALL trees bear some form of fruit; only some fruit is not edible.
In the end, one should allow oneself to be guided by need and available materials, so long as the rite is performed with respect and sincerity.

I think as long asyou make them yourself, it won't matter what you make them from. Mine are made from pebbles found on the beach that I have polished then painted with runes.
