I have a name of a woman, who I think is from Brazil. The last name is "de Matos". Please help me with these questions:
1. Is this a possible last name in Brazil?
2. If so, should this name be alphabetized under "D" or "M"?

maybe. A lot of Brazilians have Portuguese last names instead of Spanish names so i would find out if it is Portuguese or Spanish. They sound so much alike to me that it is hard to know! It doesn't sound familiar to me though (I'm Mexican so I'm used to the Spanish names), so it might be Portuguese.

Here in the US I've noticed they alphabetize "De" and "Del" last names under the "D", but in other countries it could be different.

"De Matos" is a Brazilian last name. I don't know if they use it in other Latin American countries. "De" is the preposition "of".
