Ten people ahead of me have given the correct answer. The amendment limiting the President's term was pushed mainly by the Republican party because of FDR's four successive elections. Ironically, it became effective for Eisenhower, who was the most popular Republican President in nearly a century, and might have been re-elected as many times as he wanted if the amendment had not been ratified.

The admendment to the constitution stipulating a maximum of two terms was not ratified until AFTER Roosevelt's administration. In fact, it was Roosevelt's four-term administration that inspired this amendment.

There wasn't an amendment to the Constitution prohibiting a third term until AFTER FDR's time.

Up until then it had been a tradition to let someone else have a crack at it.

The no-third-term rule was ratified to the Constitution because of FDR winning a third and a fourth term. He died less than three months into his fourth term (during Roosevelt's presidency, the inauguration date was moved from March 4 to January 20).

No, because there was no "no third term rule" at the time. An amendment was made to the constitution so it wouldn't happen again.
