I've done a couple of secret shopper jobs, but I live in a very small town so they are few and far between unless I want to drive an hour to the nearest big city. But there are a lot of them in the big city an hour away. But they are legit. The ones around here dont pay much, but like I said they pay more in the bigger cities. I havent looked at the companies I am registered with for what kind of jobs they have in NY and the only company's name I can think of off the top of my head is Best Mark.
www.bestmark.com
If you want to email me I will try to find the names of the other ones that I am registered with, but I know Best Mark was good to work with and paid me fairly quickly. And I never had to pay any kind of deposit. The only thing I ever had to pay upfront was for whatever I bought and they would reimburse me.
Good luck :)

Do not expect to become rich as a Mystery Shopper. Most shops pay between $1.00 and $10.00 depends on how complex of a shop it is.
If you are asked to pay to become a shopper it's a SCAM. Do Not Pay to Shop!! NEVER! Most often you are asked to purchase a book. Do not buy a book. All of the information you need to become a mystery shopper is available at: Mysteryshop.org for FREE!
Mystery/Secret Shopper jobs are NOT a scam.
The only scams you will find online are those that request you pay to receive a book on how to become a mystery shopper.
Anyone with good reading and writing skills can read and speak English, can become a Mystery Shopper.
NEVER pay to become a Mystery Shopper! NEVER!
The scams you see online want to sell you a book about mystery shopping - do NOT purchase it!
If anyone paid to become a shopper, report the company to the MysteryShopAssociation! (MysteryShop.org)
They oversee all Mystery Shopper Companies in the USA.
However, do NOT expect to make a lot of money. Most of the shops you will receive, pay between $1.00 and $10.00, depending on how difficult a shop you receive.
If you get a difficult shop, you will get paid more money.
You must have good writing skills, to write reports and submit them to the Mystery Shop company that gave the assignment to you.
I was a Mystery Shopper for several years. Some shops are fun. I received free Godiva Candy, free meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as, a free Gallon of paint.
You must submit your reports, by the time specified, by the Mystery Shop Company.
I prefer the shops where I get to eat free, or, get an item for free such as CD's.
Good Luck and have fun.
MysteryShop.org has a lot of good information for new and seasoned Shoppers.

My sister worked for the "Mystery Shoppers" and they ask you for a deposit first, but you eventually get the money back from working. But you could try them, they're everywhere. Good Luck :D
