I'm not sure if I trust my lawyer; could the police be posing as my lawyer (I've never met the person, but even if I had whose to say)?

Absolutely not. That would be crossing the line, and the officer(s) involved would be nailed bigtime. The information discovered would be thrown out, as well as anything developed from it.

They cannot claim to represent you in order to obtain evidence. They can pose as lawyers if they are conducting a sting operation, like to snare judges that take bribes, for instance, but they cannot say they are your lawyer to get you to confess something.

Even if your 'lawyer' turned out to be a cop, he could not use anything you say against you in court. He would be under the same rules of confidentiality that a real lawyer would because he made you think that he was one.

If a person, attorney, doctor, lawyer or Indian chief would pose as a policeman, it is because they would be up to something illegal for their own gain or setting up a sting operation to catch you in an illegal involvement.

If you don't trust your lawyer, then I would advise you to get another lawyer that you feel comfortable and trusting with.

Police can lie -- however, an attorney cannot (legally, without getting disbarred).

If you want to make sure your attorney is actually an attorney -- ask to see his Bar ID card.

And if you ever walk into court, if he is not an attorney -- that right there is a serious violation of your due process rights -- and the court will not tolerate that kind of activity.
