Since when does a mastery of one group's superstitious stories qualify you as a smart, compassionate, innovative human being deserving of adoration?

Not at all.

Whether you consider religious beliefs superstition or not -- they create a framework for a particular social and moral set of behaviors. And in most cases, the particular social and moral behaviors and rules are themselves fairly beneficial.

Besides, being a leader is about helping people get where they want to go, and providing inspiration and guidance. And whether that comes in the form of stories, or mythology, or poetry, or general philosophy -- it's the end result, and the process of getting there, that matters.
