It SHOULD be the latter..however, after beating your head against a brick wall for too many times, or after getting burned once too often...human nature reverts to the former.

It's treat others the way you would like to be treated. As far as treat others the way they treat you, only when defending yourself, and even then, you can just walk away. It's not worth the aggravation sometimes to argue.

None of them. To me, those are just some crappy quotes that never actually work.
Here are some examples to back my crap up:
1. "Treat others the way they treat you". Say somebody was really mean to you and called you all sorts of names and you did the same thing to them. You're just as low as they are.
2. "Treat others the way you would like to be treated". Not everyone wants to be treated the same exact way. So that wouldn't actually work.

The best addage would be treat others the way you WANT to treat others, because we will NEVER be treated fairly by others, and if we just continue to treat each other unfairly, because everyone else does, well then all we have is friggin' anarchy!!

You know, I usually practice the Golden Rule ("Do unto others..."), but I think from now on I am going to start treating others the way they treat me. I'm tired of people taking advantage of me and taking my kindness for weakness. I always get screwed when I try to be good to everyone. From now on, I'm going to be good to MYSELF.
