Those are the posers or people just starting out on their personal builds. Many of those loud Hondas are putting out more horsepower than your Legacy. Not to put down your Subie. It's a great car, but the Hondas are lighter and many have DOHC engines.
Hondas are just as reliable as the Legacy and you can easily swap powerplants for more powerful ones with little modification. Add the mods and you can have a streetable Honda with over 250 hp that's still friendly enough to be a daily driver. Pretty good with a 1.8 litre DOHC VTEC engine without a turbocharger . There are some street legal Hondas running sub 11 second 1/4 mile runs.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the Subaru boxer engine and I love the Legacy GT, but I also know that Hondas are so restricted in stock form, that a few mods can give impressive results. On top of that, they are very reliable. Take a Honda CRX. Put a built Acura RSX Type S engine (K20A2) into a CRX and it will easily keep up with your Legacy without turbocharging. That's not even considering the bigger power, bigger displacement, Prelude VTEC (H22) swap. Add a turbo and a few other goodies and it can give an STI a run for it's money on a dragstrip without AWD. While we don't get them here, in Europe and Asia, there are many factory-tuned Honda Civics and Accords that are sporty cars.
Eventhough all of this is true, most people add stuff because it's relatively cheap to mod a Civic. It's today's version of the old VW Bug with an endless supply of aftermarket support.

Well the people that you described are NOT the kind of Honda ppl we all know. Those kind of people who put 5" tips, crappy bodykits, a bench for an exaust, cutted springs, and other fast and furious shi tfizzles are RICERS. Not tuners. Tuners are people who give their car the sleeper look and tune their cars with mods like CAI, headers, cat backs, turbo, super chargers, intercooler etc. Those are the cool people.
Also, Honda is special because they last a very long time and at the same time, fun to drive and not be bored. Also, Honda has a rep. of building N/A vehicles.
BY THE WAY..they dont all have a 1.8 SOHC engine. -__- Some have 2.0, 2.4, 3.0etc. Or in honda terms...K20, K24, K30, C30, B18, B16, H22, F22 etc. Some have DOHC engines...and most importantly..everyone likes Hondas because of VTEC. XD
But if you want to race a worthy honda...try racing an NSX and stil see if you want to talk about them

Sporty means different things to different people.
To a high school kid with a low income and no garage a civic is a really hot car. To a yuppie with a high income and no major responsibilities like a family a Ferrari is a hot car.
The kits and exhaust are just fads that come from pop culture. The entire fast and furious franchise pretty much proliferated this trend in recent years. Kids in the 50s used to take then obsolete Fords and Chevys from the 30s and put V8 engines in them after removing the fenders to create rat rods. Each gen has their own thing.

you cant look at a car such as the Civic Jordan and think "thats not sporty"
Hondas are very well built japanese cars, it takes some ammount of abuse to kill a japanese engine.
And without causing a sitr i hope lol! it seems that because you have a subaru you look down on people who cant afford something as big as the car you have but we all have to start somewhere...
And im not believing that when you were not that long passed your driving test you didnt try and race some cars?

Maybe because they're great on gas which in today's economy is essential. Plus they look good. I used to have an older model Honda and it lasted for a very long time. I ended up with a Toyota, another great car. Both were highly recommended as the "Car of The Year"

It is cheap but a good car company.
Compared to Toyota, it is slightly better and as for your racing it is probably that the people in the Honda just have a need for speed. They don't exactly think their honda is better than your car, but they just want to race. Most people including myself love to feel the rush of the speed of acceleration.

honda designs their car to attract young population. most of their cars have huge aftermarket parts so kids who are into the cars can customize their cars.
honda also have the reputation been reliable. i own a 92 Integra made by honda, it has 220,000 miles and still runs like a champ.
