Algebra is used very often. It's probably the most applicable math to daily life. I consider it a complete necessity for people to learn.

There's many ways you can use algebra in your life. It may not seem important now but when you're older and trying to figure out how to pay your bills or how to make financial descisions all that stuff you thought was useless will come in great handy. It's just like spanish, a lot of people say 'i'm never going to use spanish' you honestly will use spansih at least once in your life after you take the class or even if you don't. You use algebra to estimate sale costs. (like 15% off etc..) Plenty of ways.

You might not be a math teacher or scientist, but most jobs use easy algebra on a daily basis. Even in real life, you'll need to know certain things - like quickly doing math to the find the most cost effective product, etc.

Of course you can go through life without algebra. Millions do. But they pay those who do know algebra to solve their problems. I'll give you a single instance (there are thousands).
You are paying someone $10/hour under a contract which states you will also add enough to pay half of that person's social security obligation. That seems easy enough. Social security (and medicare) are a combined tax of 6.2% + 1.45% = 7.65%, and 7.65% of $10 is $0.765, so you are to pay him $10.765/hour. Right? Wrong. The tax law says that your 'social security contribution' is part of the wages to be taxed at 7.65%. So you also have to pay an additional 7.65% on the $0.765, which is another 5.85 cents. Now you have to pay for 7.65% of the 5.85 cents and so on and so on. A little algebra would let you calculate the tax with a single calculation.
Believe me, opportunities to use algebra abound. Of course, you can always take a salesman's word for it, but...

Do you ever plan to go grocery shopping for more than one item? You need to use the order of operations correctly in order to know how much money to bring.
Ever want to put carpeting in your living room? The concepts of area of regular and irregular shapes are necessary to know how much carpeting to buy.
Plan on moving out of your parent's house at some point? You will need to use volume calculations to know how big of a truck to rent to move your stuff.
Want to impress your date by leaving a good tip after a meal at a fancy restaurant? You will need to use percentage calculations (in your head even) to ensure you leave an appropriate tip.
Math and algebraic calculations are in almost every aspect of life.
But, more importantly, Mathematics teaches you how to reason and think critically about a problem to find its solution. This leads you to better problem solving skills which will aid you in any subject matter or situation.

I have studied some advanced math and I can assure you that you will never use it unless you are a scientist are engineer. The most you will use is very very basic algebra... However, that shouldn't discourage you from learning because math is quite interesting after all.

My son asked me this once when we were walking in Virginia Beach. I said it came up all the time.
His next question was "how many blocks til we get to 25th Street?"
"We're on 19th street, Bob. 19 plus X equals 25. What's X?"
There you go. All the time.

You will never use it in life. Just know addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. Fractions are helpful. Learn how to tip at least 15-18% in a restaurant, and you should be set.
They won't tell you this, but it's true......
