In sports, in politics, and in war, people often demonize their opponent that is; they portray their enemies as incarnations of evil. Can you think of examples? Why do you think people do this? What effect do you think such behavior has on society as a whole?

Its also called divide and conquer...Because of its nebulous meaning to each and everyone of us....the Incarnation of evil has a social connotation because of our collective view, as aChristian (whether we like it or not) nation...We did consider Hitler as evil after the war in Europe but you could never really say that Germany was an "axis of evil" but we sure made the Germans feel that they were each responsible...they have resurgence of NeoNazi like groups when people don't feel they are getting their rightful jobs or have to compete with whoever... We have that same problem here to with Neo-nazis and with racism(which is resurging in the South again) If someone is unhappy the fastest way to make you sound better is to find the worst things you can and blame it on the people you don't like. So a title of Reincarnation of Evil is a way of fixating on a person or society to the exclusion of anyone else(who may be just as bad) We don't see Jordan or Pakistan as part of the axis of Evil even though Pakistan harbors terrorists and even Osama bin Laden...and they have nuclear weapons...but we consider Iran and Syria both part of that axis....well it is easier to get people to think alike if the President tells you over and over that they are evil...and you don't get to see anything else about them...People want their leaders to tell them the truth and to lead them so when a leader says this most people tend to believe it...then go on with their lives...so the in roads to losing your own freedoms may lie in allowing people to tell you how to believe and how to react to people who don't think just like you....It is a very aggressive way of dealing with some one you really don't like..so instead of sitting down to talk of compromise or how we can get along the answer will always be its better to kill than to deal with them because they will never change...You see how black and white that sounds?? there is no room for compassion, understanding or mediation because "they" are less than and not worth the trouble...etc. We have demonized so many people like Castro in Cuba, Hugo Cavez of Venezuala, Putin now (in Russia), Saddam in Iraq, Alellende in Chile, Sandanistas in Nicaragua, Japanese in WWII, Viet Cong in that war, Drug Czars in Colombia, the American Indians(who lived on lands the Whites wanted) the Chinese who immigrated to the US to build railroads), the slaves brought to America or Haiti to work then were freed(still having problems), who else do we demonize..In the past it nas been older wonen in Europe who could inherit land (witches) ir even whole peoples like Jews in Spain(1400's). These usually are followed by ethnic cleansings like the Yogoslavian war....the latest is in Iraq where we have invaded on one pretext to bring democracy but the reality is the invasion for control of oil resources and who is on the other side of that border but Iran with the rest of the oil...so everytime you hear the phrase "axis of evil" you should emeddiately look around, read between the lines and really try to see what is behind the emotional outburst...look to see what the enemy has and who wants i...Is that an answer???

The process you are talking about occurs when we shift from saying "person X did a bad thing" to "person X is a bad person".

There are many examples. In politics, many people hate Bush and think he is evil incarnate. Mainly because the don't like him. Some people on the opposite side say the same thing about Michael Moore, or Bill Clinton, or whoever.

They cannot seem to make the distinction between the actions the person has taken -- which may be bad, or illegal, or immoral, or whatever -- and that person as a whole.

Can you think of any examples? War...Axis of Evil in World War II and the War on Terror. Politics...Hugo Chavez referring to Bush as the devil and referencing a smell of sulphur. Sports...Red Sox fans referring to the Yankees as an evil empire.

Why do you think people do this? To show loyalty to their side and opposition to the opponent. It is rhetoric that has become common parlance.

What effect do you think such behavior has on society as a whole? Polarisation.

There is an inherent sexuality to vampires. Pardon me for be explicit, but bear in mind the similarities. The bite victim is being penetrated by the vampire in a sensitive area (the neck, or the thigh if you watch True Blood). Then an exchange of fluids occurs. It is messy. Both parties can find it enjoyable, but sometimes the penetrated only feels pain/discomfort. And Lucy in Bram Stoker's Dracula attempted to seduce Arthur. Just sayin'. The vampires by being evil offer a seductive hedonism and immortality. Part of the point is that you're drawn in and intrigued and almost find their life preferable.

President Bush and his demonization of the "Axis of evil" Iran Iraq and Korea.

Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly demonize people like Rosie O'Donnel or 911 truthers for having a non-mainstream view. Calling them Whackos and crazies for questioning the governments official story of what happened on 911.

They also demonize Ron Paul presidential candidate and purposely lie on odds and polls. :)

It ruins society because it causes blind patriotism. In America, dissent from government is more closely linked to patriotism than trusting the government. That is why our founders made a Constitution to limit the government.

It is a form of brainwashing!!!

Good question , sounds like a fun class

When you demonize a person you make them less than human. In any sort of contest, especially war, it becomes easier to destroy your opponent when you don't see them as human.
