Basically the results of building of the railroads was the expansion to west.

railroad is a means of transport so more goods products and people were transported. it hastened development of places far from main cities since they gained access.

getting from point A to point B quicker . products and produce were easily carried . Communication was quicker via mail . People started migrating to newer land ....

Think about it. Covered wagon----->train. Now everything and everyone who wanted to travel west or send their merchandise or animals, whatever they wanted, they could do it by train--faster, cheaper, and much, much less dangerous.
