The idea of using spy satellite pictures came from Professor Glees, director of Brunel University's Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies.

He said the little-known Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre, based at RAF Brampton, Cambridgeshire, was a world leader in analysing aerial and satellite imagery.
It could be ordered to collect and examine all the imagery that can be found of Praia da Luz, where the McCanns were on holiday, dating back to May 2.
Professor Glees went on: "The Prime Minister and the Ministry of Defence should instruct JARIC and its colleagues in the British intelligence community to intervene at once.

"It is perfectly possible that the European Commission's satellites, which track fishing boats, may also be able to shed light on Madeleine's fate. JARIC will quickly tell us."

A spokesman for the McCanns said: "The professor's suggestion is certainly interesting - and if it could really shed light on Madeleine's disappearance we might take it further."

I think this is the best idea yet, does anyone know more about this sort of stuff? Is it possible?

Bob, I think what they mean is to look at frames back from when she went missing, no? I hear what you are saying though I don't think thats what this gentleman meant.

I know neil, I found that odd. Why when it is a possibility for this sort of thing to help, not only with madeleine but with other missing people. If it's worth a try I say why not do it.

Pie in the Sky if you'll excuse the pun.

Most people's idea of what satellite technology can do comes from Hollywood.

i.e. fiction.

A search for Steve Fossett in america used the most high-tech up to date satellite photos to try and find him.

They said his plane would be 20 pixels by 10 pixels at closest possible resolution. That's about the size of a single letter in this post. For an aeroplane. They still haven't found him.

How big would a small child or her final resting place be? How recognisable?

UPDATE:

Again, zail your relying to much on mixing what the Professor says with fiction you've seen by watching too much Enemy of the State or 24. Very very few areas of the world are covered by real-time satellite imagery and pretty much all of them are defense satellites in conflict areas.

The rest of the world is refreshed at best, if and when a satellite is passing by. Which unless there was a reason to be updating a specific area, can happen only once every few weeks or even months.

I highly doubt anyone had reason to be updating Praia de Luz that night at that time.

JARIC only monitors areas on command from the UK government anyway, they are a military organisation and would have had little business tracking a holiday resort in Portugal.

I think this could be the best idea to date. After all, you hear boasts about satellites being able to zoom in on the small-print on a newspaper. It would be great if this could be done and I don't see any reason why not! If it helps to find out what happened to Madeleine McCann the request should be made NOW!

Great idea and worth a try but I do hope if it is a success it would be used in all future missing persons cases.

There is it again, the word 'might'. Might use this satellite imagery, 'might' get the car re-examined.

They've got all that money sitting in the fund, surely you would do anything wouldnt you?

Why all the mights?

All the 'mights' we get are certainly not what we want to hear but I certainly think this is worth a try. Lets face it nothing else has hellped and we must not leave any stone unturned.

Great Idea !!!!!!

But.......countries are very secretive about their satellites..especially if they don't want others to know what it can do......

I hope they use it, I hope it works...I hope they find Maddie alive, well and happy.

We gotta hope.
