"OK, that's for the headlights" No there is no Fan Filter.

1; There are two fans, one for the engine that comes on only when the engine is hot. The other is for the a/c and comes on every time the a/c is on, helps cool the engine because of the extra load from the a/c. Is the a/c fan every time the a/c is on (Engine running)? Is the engine fan coming on when the engine is hot (engine running)? Engine has a sensor & relay, a/c fan just has a relay. On my son's I had to replace both fan motors about a year ago.

2; Radiator & engine may need to be boiled/flushed out. Hoses are made of 3 laiers of different metarles, if they feel overly soft the could be broken on the inside, maybe folding back and restricting water flow.

Lastly 3; With the engine cool remove the radiator cap, start the engine, do you smell exhaust or see any evidance of oil?

Are those fans turning on at all if not the cooling system won't remove as much heat and if the thermostat is in wrong like top down that could be an issue as for a fan filter i never heard of that. But it could be the housing for the relays.

If the thermostat is good, and the fan kicks on when the car heats up, then what is left is the water pump there is no fan filter. To insure the thermostat is indeed functioning pull it out and see if the car still overheats if it does most likely water pump if not most likely thermostat is bad, again make sure your fan yes does engage. ps there is not filter for your fan

If it not the thermostat, anti-freeze supply, or lack of oil....then I don't see any cheap options left. I don't see many options aside from letting the professionals take a gander at it, and doubt it be a quick fix. To be frank, as old as the car is, it's not worth that type of money.
