Are golddigging American women and other Western women responsible for murder, genocide, and slavery taking place in Africa?

Why are Western women so attracted to such superficial rocks? Do women that wear diamond rings, necklaces, and earrings have blood on their hands? Are they aware that her demands are responsible for the blood, sweat, and tears endured by impovrished people of the world

The other day I was at the gym, and heard some superficial, stuck-up, ball-busting Western woman gossipping with another woman, saying how she wouldn't marry her fiance unless he bought her a big enough stone. And I overheard her ranting that she wouldn't take her fiance's last name if married. Men work hard to take care of their women, and many women are unappreciative and get mad about stone size.

Thankfully, I'm with a wholesome woman, and we've agreed that if we planned on getting married, we'd look in to other alternative engagement/wedding rings.

Jay: I was born in the US. It's great how you assumed that I was a foreigner.

ProfessorC: Um, if you're a professor, you'd know that "male jewelers" (for some reason you don't think female jewelers exist) are only successful because there lies a DEMAND. Without the demand, there are no male jewelers -- the source of the problem is the superficial demand to consume these shiny rocks; the vast majority of this demand coming from women.

And yes, my girlfriend is well aware of my views. She's an active member of Yahoo Answers. She's an anti-feminist and pro-equalist herself.

Jay: No problem. I use "Western" because I can't think of any other phrase to clump the "Industrialized" nations in... this is referring to Western Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and perhaps to a lesser extent Japan since it is heavily Westernized and industrialized. Peace.

cyndi a: You seem pretty angry. And women and children make big screen TV's in sweatshops? LOL!!! Never heard that one. I was certain clothes, shoes, and soccer balls were made in sweatshops -- not TV's. TV's are manufactured in which a higher degree of techinical knowledge is required. And everything else you spewed was just bitter hateful rants that don't need to be addressed.

midnite_tequila: I disagree. The demand from fossil fuels is a commodity that is of almost equal demand between men and women. Women drive cars, fly in airplanes, and use electricity that may have a gas power source.

ProfessorC: I disagree. You may be a professor, but I'm assuming your field has nothing to do with Economics? LOL. There is no rule that says that if you stop the supply, then you'll stop the demand. Demand increases when the supply decreases -- and the price goes up. If there was only one diamond left in the world, the price would be extraordinary and probably only a few billionaires would be able to afford it.

After I heard about the diamond trade and the atrocities committed to obtain them, I refuse to wear diamonds. My and my husband's wedding rings are simple silver bands.

If a guy is so considerate to get a woman an engagement ring, i think it would be his selection and interior of his budget. If the female needs some thing greater costly, rather of the guy having to flow into debt for it, she will pay the soundness. i'm a woman and that i do no longer think of a extensive diamond skill plenty, fairly if the female is grasping.

An interesting question indeed, on many points. I'm detecting mysogynistic undertones. (1) Men are the ones digging this stuff up, not women. (2) Not all women are into diamonds. I personally don't wear jewelry, as I don't care for it. I prefer a good book. But thanks for the generalization. (3) Have you LOOKED at P. Diddy's ears? And fingers? He's a MAN. (4) How about men being responsible for women and children in third world countries working in sweatshops making those big screen TV's you love so much? (While we're generalizing.) (5) No need to be bitter because you work at Mickey Dee's and can't afford one. And last but not least, (6) It's probably better to let your girl know you're gay now, before the wedding. Just a thought.

I think you make a good point, although I don't believe it's quite as black and white as that. But the bottom line ladies is that w/o demand, there is no market. Just like illegal drugs.

Of course similar things can be said about men's hobbies/likes. But the question was about women and diamonds.

I totally agree with you. This is why I refuse to buy any diamonds or get any as gifts. I told my husband not to buy me anymore. In defense, I think alot of ppl are not aware of the situation in Africa. There needs to be more awareness.

Did you realize that diamonds are not even rare? One man owns rights to 95% of the diamond trade and he only releases a few diamonds every year in order to drive up demand and prices.

It should be the other way around, the Indian woman loved Diamonds, to win a wife, the mother in law you must catch.

place the largest and rarest stones and there you will get the daughter you were after -after all.

No one cares whose blood was shed to get those stones, no one knows whose bones were numbered to dig or grind, to buff or shine they are not bothered about these things, so long as its the largest stone on that ring.

Be she black, blue, red , brown or whilte, its the diamond of her life. Greed for woman to own a diamond is still see, but its very unlucky if its not your birth stone.

Dont ever go near it, even pearl make you cry all your life I am told.

No, the people that enslave others are responsible, as well as the diamond dealers that buy from questionable sources. There needs to be a zero-tolerance policy for companies that buy conflict diamonds.
Also, I think more than anyone else, the wealthy create the demand. Men and women are both responsible.

I wear my grandmother's engagement ring.

As an American women, I have never demanded a diamond. In fact, I do not now, nor have I ever owned a diamond.

Ever think it might be those male jewelers, who are making all of the money, having something to do with it.

Does your wholesome woman know what you actually think about women? As for not taking someone elses name at marriage it is personal choice. Thats that equality thing we talk about.

BTW the diamond on my hand was my mothers engagement ring- way larger than was traditional in her day- but then it was her mother in laws ring.

Sorry but no supply no demand - WHO created the demand? People who had diamonds to sell. And yes the diamond markets are mostly controlled by men. Know your facts before you spew.

OK first off I hate diamonds, and I think that men as well are responsible, if they don't like the diamond thing they don't have to go with it.

Another thing it is the countries themselves that need to work on their economy and not pass the blame. They do what they do out of greed, and not everyone is greedy like that, and lets face it Africa has been invloved with slavery for a long time in fact Africans are the ones who sold African slaves to the slave traders. They also are responsible for thier own genocide as they hate a nieghbor because they are from a enemy tribe... this has nothing to do with American woman.
