Probably Adolf Hitler; by all accounts he kept himself emotionally isolated in the extreme,all his frienships being confined to a single role; i.e. lunching with his secretaries,taking long drives with his chaufffer,etc. But no all-around friend,not one. And yet he was briefly the head of the largest single empire the world has ever seen.

At one time... Howard Hughes. Despite all his money and fame, his phobias eventually turned him into a paranoid recluse. He isolated himself to the extent that when he passed away, his hair and nails were unkempt. He had many people working for him, he dated many famous actresses etc. and yet..he died alone.

I googled "the loneliest man on earth" and the first image that came up was of a man alone in a bunker.
That could be a very lonely and somber experience.
