Hey everyone im 16 and i just got my g.e.d and i want to goto college in Jan.. But i only made it to 10th grade and this may sound stupid but i suck at math.. Can someone explain to me how to do this problem please! I dont know why im stuck on this one.
Ive done alot today..

1.) 1/2 + (2/3 / 3/4) - ( 4/5 * 5/6)


If any one any pre-tests for any college math that would be great.

PEMDAS says that you do the paretheticals first, then exponents, then multiplication/division, then addition/subtraction, and all from left to right.

So, doing the parantheticals, you get:

1/2 + (8/9) - (20/30)

Then you can reduce the 20/30 by dividing both top (numerator) and bottom (denominator) by 10. So doing so gives you 2/3 and now the equation looks like:

1/2 + 8/9 - 2/3

Since there are no exponents or any more multiplication/division, PEMDAS says to do adding and subtracting next. Subtracting and adding fractions means that you need a common denominator. The least common denominator of 2, 9, and 3 is 18, so you gotta change each fraction to have 18 in the denom. So 1/2 becomes 9/18 (multiply top and bottom by 9). Then 8/9 becomes 16/18 (multiply top and bottom by 2). And finally 2/3 becomes 12/18 (multiply both by 6). So now you got:

9/18 + 16/18 - 12/18

This is the same as:

(9+16-12)/18

Now you just do the adding and subtracting of the numerator and you get:

13/18.

- first do the functions inside brackets
- when multiplying fractions just do top*top and bottom*bottom
2/3 / 3/4 is the same as 2/3 * 4/3 (just flip the second term)
= 8/9
4/5*5/6 = 20/30 which reduces to 2/3 (divide top and bottom by 10)

Now, just combine three terms together
1/2 + 8/9 - 2/3 (find common denominator to add)

9/18 + 16/18 - 12/18 = add the top but bottom stays the same

= 13/18 ANSWER

order of operations (perentheses, exponents, multiplication & division, addition & subtraction) says do the division and multiplication first

4/5*5/6

easy, just multiply the tops, then the bottoms.

20/30

or just

2/3

division is the same, just flip the second one first

2/3 / 3/4
=
2/3 * 4/3

8/9

then find the common denominator to do the addition and subtraction, in this case, 18

9/18 + 16/18 - 12/18

13/18
