who else thinks this andrew meyer, the tasered student from the university of florida, got what he deserved? i'm sick of hearing people complain about how this is some sort of attack on the first amendment. this was not censorship. this was a police response to a moderator asking them to calm down an overzealous conspiracy nut who was being nothing more than a nuissance. depending on what video you watch you can see a moderator asking the police to step in and get the guy under control. he refused to calm down. then it looks as if the moderator asked to have him removed. again he refused. they were within their rights to arrest him after that on grounds of disorderly conduct. he resisted arrest and so they tased him. let's say someone was doing that at your church, or in a classroom. would we even give it a second thought?

He's lucky he only got tasered. If I'd done that at his age, I'd have gotten billy clubs.

As you describe it -- yes, that is a valid reason to taser someone. I haven't read the case in detail, so let's assume your facts are correct.
Free speech is protected, but not absolute. It can be restricted if the person is conducting themselves in a manner that is overly disruptive or dangerous. If the person tasered was actually at that level, where they could be arrested for disturbing the peace, then tasering would be appropriate.
The facts and circumstances matter -- if someone else was just as disruptive, but had taken the opposite viewpoint -- and that person was still allowed to speak -- THAT becomes censorship, where only one side of an argument is silenced.

I think they were absolutely in their right to arrest him, at that point. He was trying to take over the discussion and, frankly, comes across as not quite mentally balanced. I just wish the campus cops had some alternative less extreme than tasing him once he resisted arrest.

this is not the America I grew up in, you people scare me
we used to just Boo long winded hecklers until they left or were escorted out ... that is what democracy is all about, should we tazer politicians when they filibuster? ... peaceful protest, no matter how annoying, can never be dealt with with violence ... have we learned absolutely nothing from from the civil rights movement
MLK Jr. gave his life to fight against your thought process

it was right to attempt to get him out of the building. after all, he was disturbing the peace.
however..tasing the student was unnecessary. i'm sure 7 security guards would have had no problem carrying a single student 40 feet. it's not like he was armed or anything.

I watched the video clip, and it looked to me like he was really out of control, the cops gave him every chance to leave quietly, and he was just wild. I suspect he wanted to make a point about "police brutality," because he kept saying things like "they're going to kill me." Boy needs to grow up.

Ol' Andy didn't just get what he deserved - he got what he wanted: attention. The poor little moron is so severely deprived that he has to go to fairly great lengths to receive the attention he so richly wants and deserves.
Guess ol' Andy's mommy wasn't one of the Earth Mother types, huh?!? :-)))))))))

I was on his side until I found out he was one of the jerks who spoiled the last Harry Potter book. What a dick. Taze him again, for me.
