The same way that earthquakes in southern california cause epidemics of "valley fever". The impact kicks up a lot of dust and dust naturally has virus in it.

By crashing into a patch of ground with fungus and germs in it. The dirt and fungus are tossed into the air, and spread around for a kilometer or two or three. Then the people breath the air with all that junk and get sick.

Same thing would have happened if somebody had dynamited that patch of ground.
