I think they both helped and caused harm. Certainly they had many of us questioning Kerry's military service, but I think they made too many unfounded statements.
I'm not sure if it was the Swift Vets, but one of the facts that came out was that Kerry lied in the Congressional record about his experience in Vietnam. See the link below:

Disagree. Their accounts were not credible. Only one of the Swiftboaters actually served on Kerry's boat. Funny, the rest of his crew had positive things to say about him. I think they just disagreed with him politically or were offended that he embraced the anti-war movement.
