I recently took my explorer (2001 xlt, 4door) in for a smog test and I failed the test. My overall test results showed that I PASSed the visual inspection and PASSed the emissions test, but FAILed the functional check. The code (P0117) showed that the engine coolant temperature sensor was showing low input. does anyone know how much it would cost to fix this? I live in California... Also, because it showed that code as having low input it caused my Check engine light to come on

If you have the 4.0. it has a plastic thermostat housing and if you get it out, there's a good chance the threads will come with it. You may have to replace the whole thing, your looking at $300-$400 dollars at the dealer..

try wiggling the wires first, if that don't work try flushing the system, maybe that will jog it. Are you testing it at AUTO ZONE?

It's an $11 part at Autozone. If the wire was loose you'd be getting a high input reading.

just about any independent shop will give you a free estimate. otherwise you could fork out about 60 to 80 dollars to buy your own diagnostic tester. The check engine light could be one of a hundred things. Better get it checked sooner rather than later before it turns into something worse.
