Because the English had New England and the coast of the Mid-Atlantic and the kind of land in the Applachians was attractive to people who lived under similar conditions before coming over, small farms not plantations. Once you got a small core localized, they attracted more people.

Most Scots Irish were Protestant immigrants, first from Scotland, where they were given land which had been rented to Catholic natives of Ireland. When they came to America, mostly during the mid 1800s most of the population in the South was poorer and farm labor, which they had done in Ireland was plentiful. In other words, a poor sheep farmer from Northern Ireland would have no money to buy land in the more developed northern states.

I'm glad you're interested in this history. Most people aren't any more.

Religious and class tensions were part of it. The Scotch-Irish (known over here as Ulster Scots) were Presbyterians who were discriminated against via the Penal Laws because of their 'dissenting' beliefs and practices. Similar laws were in place in the American colonies, so they tended to move away from the mainstream Protestants along the coast.

Pennsylvania was the first area they settled. Land shortages encouraged many to move south, where land was cheaper. And move south again.

First---Anchor, the people who were in the mountains of the South before the Scots-Irish were my people, the Cherokee. Are you suggesting we were devoid of real culture? If so, you need to look up Mound Builders and Missisippian civilization.

Now to answer the question--

The land was much cheaper than in the Northeast, and the area also resembled the hills of Ireland that the people were used to. They met many Native people along the way, got to know them, adopted farming customs and other aspects of our cultures, and created what's known as Southern culture today. It's a mix of Native, Celtic and West African cultures.
