it is more than likely the lifters making noise and one reason is because the octane of the gas is not high enough or it could be because they are not getting enough oil

Octane doesn't have anything to do with rattling valves. It could be low oil pressure to the lifters. A few engines don't have hydraulic lifters and need the valves adjusted now and then. Or, the engine could just be worn out.

NO ONE can answer this without MORE INFO like WHAT kind of car from WHAT year made by WHO and with what engine size and mileage!!!! SOME OLDER engines will "PING" if POORER octane gas is used in them! Some VALVE RATTLING is from DIRTY HYDRAULIC LIFTERS and your engine needs a FULL MOTOR FLUSHING treatment to remove SLUDGE< and cooked in COKE and VARNISH deposits! ALl engines now MUST be CLEAN as showroom to work the way they should!!! <<>>take $20 top the local OIL CHANGE CENTEER andhave your THROTLE BODY and IDL AIR CONTROL VAVLE celaend up to shworomo clean! this is wher th FINAL AIR/FUELmxiture occurs and a DIRTY IAC cannot react to O2 sensor signals givien off!
