Elves, due to their superior lifespan, can possess a depth that many other characters lack. Over the years, my most satisfying characters have been elves. I have played elvish rangers, thieves, magi, priests and assassins, plus various multiclass characters. I don't play only elves, though, but more often than not, I play an elf.
In many campaigns, I have been the only elf in the group, and have proven to be a welcome addition to the group, using my spells, my weapons and my brains to help out as best I can.
Though chaotic in alignment, remember that just represents an elf's interest in personal freedom. Other than drow, elves are (in general) good hearted, and very loyal friends.
Elves do not fear death, as they see that death is only one phase in a long existence. In worlds like Middle Earth, elves do not die except by violent action - they are immune to disease and do not suffer from extremes of heat or cold.
Hope this helps.

Not to be a spoil sport here, but the only ELVES I know about are the ones that come with SANTA CLAUS, and since Santa Claus has not paid a visit to my house in years - being that I am not such a good girl - I have yet to see any... However, if there are any ELVES that would like to pay my house a visit sans Santa, please do the following for me:
One - the Dishes. I hate doing dishes. This is because I love to cook. Two - shoe shining. I know most of my shoes come from Payless and are cheap vinyl but I figure you'll know how to shine them anyway. Three: the socks. Please do not fill with coal. Fill with GOLD COINS. This is an emergency.
THANK YOU Madam

I played a elven bard once i got up to level 17 before my character was killed in the underdark by some drow priestesses of Loth doing a ceremony and i stumbled into the middle of them because i set off a teleportation trap, i tried to use my enchanted harp to make them sleep because the harp lowers magic resistance of anyone who hears the music but there high magic resistance won and i was sacrificed to the goddess.

I could write you a book about how to play an elf character, but instead, the best advice I can offer is for you to become your character when you are gaming. Then be yourself when not gaming.

i have, but it's been a long time... back when i was younger and didn't have as many responsibilities as i do now. it was a lot of fun. we would pretty much play all weekend.
i had a lawful good ranger. i don't think the classes are even the same anymore. i was never any good at playing evil characters. my brother used to tell me i was too nice. lol

Always remember, everybody else is a member of a lesser species. It's your responsibility to help them because they're incapable of managing it on their own. That was always my take on elves..
